Matrix Providers is hiring an Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist to join our team of talented professionals who provide health care services to our Military Service Members and their families in Fort Belvoir, VA.
- Employment Status: Full Time, 40 Hours per week
- Monday - Friday: 7AM to 3:30 PM

- Degree: Certificate
- Education: Complete an ophthalmology technician or an optometric technician course.
- Certification: Possess and maintain current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology or a completed a formal ophthalmic training program of the United States Armed Forces.
- Experience: One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist after graduation.
- Provide a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist/ophthalmologist as appropriate to the level of certification (i.e., COA, COT, or COMT).
- Obtain patient histories, perform prescription verification, and maintain patient records.
- Assist in testing patient vision. Test far and near acuity, peripheral vision, depth
perception, and color perception. - Examine the eye, using a slit lamp, for abnormalities of the cornea and anterior and posterior chambers.
- Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
- Measure intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test).
- Test the field of vision for defects, including central and peripheral vision, and chart test results on graph paper.
- Measure the axial length of the eye using ultrasound equipment.
- Instruct patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling.
- Measures and records distance and near vision; perform color testing and pinhole testing.
- Performs: Basic visual acuity test, Contrast Sensitivity testing, Lensometry, Autorefraction and keratometry, basic ocular motility tests, performs visual field testing (automated and manual), Ophthalmic photography, pupillometry, tonometry, and glare testing.
- Ensures appropriate calibration, cleanliness, and maintenance of all examination and treatment equipment.
- Serves as a scrub in the minor and main operating rooms, for various ophthalmic procedures.
- Teach contact lens care.
- Apply and remove therapeutic contact lenses.
- Basic knowledge of DICOM communication
- Experience in using OCT, visual fields, and other applicable ophthalmic device modality to communicate via DICOM standards.
- Utilizes Modality Work Lists (MWL) to document examinations; reconciles MWL with existing patient databases to minimize medical errors and duplications.
- Assist providers in documenting in the medical record according to the policies and procedures of the organization.
- Direct the flow of patients: obtain medical and personal data for patients for conditions excluding ocular examination; arrange for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies and patient admissions and surgery as requested by the physician.
- Alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and referring specific questions to the doctor.
- Screen walk-in patients, emergency patients and telephone calls from patients and referring physicians to determine appropriate physician and priority of appointments.
- Performs inspection and preparation of instruments, materials, and equipment to ensure that they are clean and in proper working condition. Sterilize and set up instruments for surgical procedures; assist with minor office surgery, laser treatments and operating room surgery as required.
- Perform inventory of assigned examination rooms to ensure adequate supplies are in stock.
- This shall be coordinated with the supply officer of the CRS (Central Sterile Resupply)
- Program to ensure all supply requests are met.
- Adhered to infection control guidelines and practice universal precautions. Be responsible for the safe and effective operation of equipment used in patient care and contributing to a safe working environment.
- This shall include safe practices of emergency procedures.
- Proper handling of hazardous materials and maintenance of physical security.
