Job Requirements
Do I have to be military to find a job on Hyv?
No, you don’t. All of the positions posted on Hyv are available to civilian healthcare workers. You do not have to join the military to serve those who serve. All you need is experience in your profession (amount varies by position) and a desire to do your job in a meaningful setting.
If I want to work in a different state do I need to get a separate license?
Often No! As long as you are licensed in any state, you can usually perform work on a federal military base in any state in the country. This is one of the great advantages of federal healthcare work.
What experience level is required?
Experience level requirements vary by profession and position. Some locations have stricter requirements than others. If the position you desire requires more experience than you currently have, or even if you are still a student and have no experience, do not be discouraged. Hyv is here for you. We will continue to add education and career building opportunities, and before you know it your perfect Hyv job match will appear!
Is security clearance required?
This varies widely by position and location. When you apply for a particular position you will be contacted by a member of the staffing company who will walk you through the clearance process for that position.
What else do I need?
The basics are outlined on Hyv’s pre-application readiness checklist including: ID, Social Security Card, letters of referral, your complete resume, records of education, licensing and work history, and a skills checklist. You will also need a recent occupational physical exam and vaccinations. Each base may have its own specific requirements but having this information together and up to date is a great starting point. From here, the staff from the hiring company will walk you through exactly what you need to ensure your success.
Job Details
If I accept one of these jobs will I be a 1099 contractor or will I be a W-2 employee?
It depends on the job. You may see the word “contractor” used often in reference to the jobs posted on Hyv. This is because the federal government contracts the staffing companies to fill the positions. As an employee of the staffing company your status will depend on the position. Most, but not all, of the positions posted on Hyv are for full time W-2 employees. Whether your agreement is for a W-2 or a 1099 position, you will be employed by the staffing company while you work on the military base or federal medical facility.
Are these federal government jobs?
Hyv posts jobs that have been contracted to commercial employers by the government. This means that, in most cases, if you accept a job posted on Hyv by one of our partner staffing company employers, you will be working at a federal location like a military base or federal medical facility, but you will not be a federal employee. You will enjoy some of the benefits of federal work, others will not apply. That said, you will experience some freedom and some of the benefits generally not available to federal employees. As with all things, there are positives and negatives of both routes. Some of the specific differences include:
- Health insurance
- Federal employees: Directly employed federal workers receive health insurance coverage through the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB).
- Civilian healthcare workers employed by government contractors: Benefits are provided through the staffing company employer. Each employer offers a different set of benefits that must be considered during the hiring process.
- Retirement
- Federal employees: Federal employees typically participate in the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), including a Basic Benefit Plan, Social Security, and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) (similar to a 401(k).
- Civilian healthcare workers employed by government contractors: Benefits are provided through the staffing company employer. These often do include perks such as 401(k) but each plan must be carefully reviewed during the hiring process.
- Paid time off
- Federal employees: Federal employees are entitled to a very specific pre-determined amount of paid time off (PTO), sick leave, and paid holidays.
- Civilian healthcare workers employed by government contractors: Each staffing company employer has their own policy. It may or may not mirror the federal policy. This is another item to review closely during the hiring process. Most federal locations are closed on federal holidays, and most workers get paid for those holidays.
- Compensation and Security
- Federal employees:
- Federal employees typically have lower compensation rates that are strictly bound by the Salaries and Wages Tables established by the US Office of Personnel Management.
- They have historically enjoyed a certain level of job security. There is usually little flexibility in federal positions.
- Many healthcare workers who chose this route pursue and maintain federal careers based on the opportunities available for advancement and professional development.
- Civilian healthcare workers employed by government contractors:
- Compensation is higher for the healthcare workers employed by staffing companies.
- Their positions are typically as stable as they desire, but they can expect some periodic management changes.
- They are not candidates for moving up the ladder in federal positions.
- Most healthcare workers who choose this route are interested in a healthcare career that allows them to serve those who serve, and enjoy the day-to-day benefits of the work while maintaining flexibility. These healthcare workers can expect higher salaries and can move more easily.
How stable will my job be?
While every situation is different, careers for civilian healthcare workers employed by staffing companies contracted by the government tend to have the dual advantage of flexibility and stability. If the contracting company changes, the civilian healthcare workers are nearly always asked to continue work at the location under the new contract company. Good news - the new contract company is bound by law to compensate at equal or higher rates. You can generally count on a stable career in this system. On the flip side, maintaining your independence as a civilian working for a federal contractor allows you the flexibility to make changes whenever you need them.

What types of “federal” locations are represented on Hyv?
Many of the jobs posted on Hyv are on military bases, also known as “installations”, or at VA hospitals. That said, federal healthcare does cover a wider population of humanitarian need, and all areas are important for sustaining the health of our country. You may find one particular area that speaks to your heart, so visit often to see what’s new. On Hyv’s site, you are likely to find a variety of locations reflected in job postings including but not limited to:

• Border Patrol and Prisons
What are the benefits of working on military bases or at federal medical facilities?
There are so many benefits to working positions on military bases and federal medical facilities! Some of the perks include:
License Location Flexibility. You need to be licensed in your healthcare profession to work on a military base. The great news is that you only need a license in one state (ANY state) to perform your job on any military installation in the country or in a US territory. This allows you to move much more freely between locations without having to jump through hoops (and costs) to get and maintain licenses in different states. The rules may be different for federal medical facilities so make sure to check with your staffing company recruiter.
Paid Holidays. For the most part healthcare workers at federal locations get government holidays off – PAID!
Camaraderie. There is no team like Team USA. And there is nothing like coming together with your teammates to support the health of our nation’s heroes and their families, our veterans, and humanitarian patient populations.
Patriotism. Civilian healthcare jobs at federal locations are great options for veterans, military spouses, and military family members! But they are also an excellent fit for healthcare workers without military history who simply want to make a difference. Civilian healthcare jobs with federal contract staffing companies are the perfect opportunity to answer the call and let your inner healthcare hero shine!
No insurance nightmares. This is one of the great benefits of working in the federal healthcare setting. On military bases and in federal medical facilities, you don’t have to waste your time worrying about what is covered by insurance. Your patients get what they need. And you simply get to spend your time taking care of your patients.
You are covered. Malpractice is part of the deal.
Favorable patient ratios. Positions at military bases and federal medical institutions typically offer a much better patient ratio than positions in the commercial world. This allows you to take your time and provide the excellent care that both you and your patients deserve.
Work life balance. Many of the healthcare jobs on military bases and at federal medical facilities are “bankers hours” positions. If you enjoy being home on the evenings and weekends, and appreciate a “no call” schedule while still having time to talk with your patients, you will find these jobs quite appealing!
What if I don’t live near a base or don’t want to work on a base?
Don’t worry, federal healthcare jobs come in all shapes and sizes, as well as locations. These roles can be found at VA hospitals and facilities across the country, as well as areas of need/humanitarian populations, Indian Reservations, Border Patrol, Prisons, and many more.
