We've used the flag patch on our den leader's uniform before when there wasn't a proper flag present.

"I pledge allegiance to the Gene" doesn't really have a good ring to it.

But they didn't pledge allegiance to the Gene. They pledged their allegiance to the flag, which just so happened to adorn Gene's body.
